TMC offers a powerful interpretation of one of the pinnacles of choral music – Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah

2016-17 Season

The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir celebrates Artistic Director Noel Edison’s 20th anniversary season with the Choir with a performance of Felix Mendelssohn’s great oratorio, Elijah at Koerner Hall on November 5th. The 135-voice TMC and Festival Orchestra will be joined by four critically-acclaimed soloists. American bass-baritone David Pittsinger, praised for his roles in opera and as Emile de Becque in South Pacific, will make his debut performance of Elijah.

TMC presents the Elora Festival Singers in concert

2016-17 Season

The TMC launches its 2016/17 season by presenting the Grammy-nominated Elora Festival Singers in concert on October 16. In this season, celebrating Noel Edison’s 20th with the Choir, the TMC is proud to give audiences an opportunity to experience Noel’s internationally-acclaimed chamber choir, the Elora Festival Singers (the other half of his artistic life), in Toronto. The EFS will perform a cappella works by the Italian Renaissance master Palestrina and contemporary composers Arvo Pärt, John Tavener and Jocelyn Morlock.

Toronto Mendelssohn Choir celebrates Artistic Director Noel Edison’s 20th season

2016-17 Season

The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir (TMC) presents a season of inspiring choral music for 2016/17 – from an intimate a cappella performance to a grand oratorio with full orchestra. In November the Choir celebrates Noel Edison’s 20th season with one of his favourite works, Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah, at Koerner Hall.

Noel Edison has been widely recognized and appreciated by choristers, critics and patrons for his skillful interpretive work with both choir and orchestra. His vision for the TMC is to create performances that connect audiences emotionally with some of the greatest traditional and contemporary choral repertoire.

TMC announces conductors for 2016 Choral Conductors Symposium

2015-16 Season

Five conductors from across North America have been selected to participate in the TMC’s sixth annual Choral Conductors’ Symposium (Jan 26-30, 2016), led by conductor and artistic director Noel Edison. Conductors will work with Noel and with the Elora Festival Singers and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir on a variety of choral music for chamber and large-scale ensembles, including works by composers from Palestrina, Mendelssohn and Elgar to Britten, Pärt and Corlis.

TMC announces winner of first annual Debbie Fleming Prize for Choral Composition

2015-16 Season

The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir launched a new Choral Composition Competition for emerging Canadian composers in August 2015. This competition called on unpublished Canadian composers to submit a work, not more than five minutes in length, for SATB or double choir, either a cappella or accompanied by piano or organ. The Choir received 28 submissions from composers across the country.

In December a jury of four leading choral musicians met to discuss the compositions and awarded the Debbie Fleming Prize for Choral Composition to Stuart Beatch of Regina, Saskatchewan for his work Psalm 100. Beatch receives the cash prize of $1000 and his work will be premiered at the TMC’s Choral Conductors’ Symposium free concert at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church on Saturday, January 30, 2016 (www.tmchoir.org/FreeConcert).

Toronto Mendelssohn Choir launches new Choral Composition Competition for emerging composers

2015-16 Season

The TMC is calling for choral composition submissions to its new Choral Composition Competition, an annual competition launched in August 2015. This competition focuses on works by emerging unpublished Canadian composers. Composers will be asked to submit an unpublished work for SATB or double choir, either a cappella or accompanied by piano or organ that is not more than 5 minutes in length. The deadline for submissions is November 13, 2015.

Jennifer Min-Young Lee named as Associate Conductor

2014-15 Season

Following a competitive application process, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir named Jennifer Min-Young Lee as the incoming associate conductor for Fall 2015. Jennifer will hold this two-year position for the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons. During her tenure she will work closely with Artistic Director Noel Edison and will conduct the Choir in rehearsal and in concert.

The TMC’s 2015/16 season will build on the success of the 2014/15 season and create great musical experiences for audiences– from the drama of the story of creation captured in music by Haydn, to the romance of choral lieder by Brahms and Schubert, and the contemplative space created in the works of contemporary composers.
