The Legacy Continues: Jean-Sébastien Vallée Conducts Handel’s Messiah

For nearly a century, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir has joined the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in presenting Handel’s Messiah—a tradition cherished by generations of music lovers. This year marks a significant moment as TMChoir’s own Artistic Director, Jean-Sébastien Vallée, takes the podium to lead this beloved masterpiece during the choir’s 130th anniversary season.

Reflecting on the opportunity to conduct Messiah, Jean-Sébastien shared, “This piece is a cherished holiday tradition in Toronto, bringing people together, year after year. Each time I perform it, I discover something new and magical.”

Handel’s Messiah is a work of remarkable depth and resilience, evolving since its debut in 1742 to adapt to the tastes of audiences across centuries. From the premiere performance in Dublin to grand productions with massive choruses, Messiah has become a universal symbol of community and celebration.

“The message of Handel’s Messiah is timeless,” Jean-Sébastien noted. “It’s a celebration of hope, joy, and the triumph of light over darkness.”

As we celebrate the opening night of this extraordinary concert series, Jean-Sébastien Vallée will appear on Radio-Canada’s Dans la Mosaïque with Myriam Eddahia on December 17th at 3:20 PM. In this French-speaking interview, Jean-Sébastien will discuss Messiah, the progress of TMChoir’s 24/25 Season, and the exciting mainstage concerts coming in the new year.
